Behind the Scenes: Creating Camp Northstar

Of all the locations in "Summer Sanctuary," Camp Northstar holds a special place in my heart. This fictional summer camp on the shores of Pine Lake is where Emma first begins to rediscover herself after fleeing Chicago, and it's inspired by several real camps where I spent formative summers.

While plotting "Summer Sanctuary," I knew Emma needed a place that would offer both purpose and protection—somewhere she could be useful while remaining somewhat separate from the wider community as she began her healing journey. A summer camp provided the perfect solution.

Camp Northstar embodies several elements I believe make summer camps magical spaces:

  • The suspension of ordinary time: Summer camp exists in its own bubble, following rhythms completely different from regular life
  • The return to simplicity: Without technology and city distractions, emotions and experiences become more immediate
  • The focus on community: Camp creates instant belonging through shared experiences and traditions
  • The connection with nature: Being outdoors provides perspective that indoor living often lacks

For Emma, Camp Northstar offers something crucial: a place where her professional skills are needed without the high-stakes pressure of her ER career. As the camp nurse, she can still help others while having space to help herself.

Some of my favorite scenes take place in the small medical cabin that becomes Emma's first true sanctuary in Pine Lake. The building itself—with its weathered pine boards, screen door that creaks, and shelves of neatly organized supplies—represents the orderly refuge she creates for herself.

It's also where several pivotal moments in her relationship with Liam unfold, including the emergency that first brings them together professionally and reveals how well they work as a team.

If you've ever experienced the special magic of summer camp—as a camper or counselor—I think you'll recognize the authentic camp atmosphere in "Summer Sanctuary." And if you haven't, perhaps Emma's summer at Camp Northstar will give you a taste of what makes these lakeside communities so special.

"Summer Sanctuary" is available to preorder now, ready to transport you to a perfect summer at Pine Lake.
